    Cortisol

    To assist in diagnosis of adrenocortical insufficiency, Addison’s disease, adrenocortical hypersecretion, Cushing’s syndrome. Malfunction of the organs in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal cortex axis will result in alteration of the cortisol levels. Levels are also affected in clinical depression.

    *Specimens must be collected in the morning between 7 – 9 AM, or in the afternoon between 3 – 5 PM, due to cortisol levels in the body.

    FSH is useful in the differential diagnosis of gonadal and pituitary insufficiency. LH is used mainly to evaluate normalcy of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. LH measurement is used also in the diagnosis and treatment of infertility in women. Decreased LH levels are associated with primary ovarian hyperfunction in females and primary hypergonadism in males.
